Welcome to the CITY Family Your Ultimate Resource and GuideEverything you need to get started and beyond. Who We Are Our Story — Where It All Began
CITY HOME began in 1971 as "Waterbed City." Kevin Charles Koenig returned home to Fort Lauderdale from college and opened a small waterbed retail store. He would sell the waterbeds during the day, build them at night, and deliver them the next day. Business was good — everybody wanted one. He was soon joined by his younger brother Keith, and together the small company expanded with additional locations. They were among the first retailers to partner with North Carolina wood furniture manufacturers, bringing in dressers, mirrors, and nightstands to complement the waterbeds. The company grew steadily stronger every year. In the late 1980s, it became clear the waterbed business had peaked. Wanting to be the #1 furniture retailer in South Florida, Kevin and Keith decided to reinvent their business — becoming a full-line furniture store selling bedroom furniture, mattresses, dining rooms, living rooms, wall units, and fabric sofas. They also decided it was time to change the name to CITY Furniture. In 1994, they opened the first CITY Furniture mega store in North Miami. It was a major gamble — but it paid off almost immediately. Within the first few months, profits were twice what they had estimated. They quickly converted their other Waterbed City stores. The transition was difficult and costly, but strong sales meant CITY Furniture was well on its way. Today, with an incredible team of Associates, we have created a sought-after brand and top-rated shopping experience for hundreds of thousands of Floridians. Innovation, continuous reinvestment, and a family-spirited culture have built a company that is now the #1 furniture retailer in South Florida and in the top 20 nationwide. Most recently, CITY Furniture has undergone an exciting brand evolution — becoming CITY HOME. This shift reflects our growth beyond furniture into a true home destination, offering everything from furnishings to décor, all backed by the same family spirit and commitment to quality that has defined us since 1971. The story isn't over — we're just getting started. Our Vision, Purpose, Mission & ValuesOur VisionTo be the ultimate home store. Our PurposeTo enrich people's lives and make the world a better place.
